EDINBURGH 2016 - BWW Review: CHEF: COME DINE WITH US!, Assembly George Square Theatre, 10 August

They say don't judge a book by its cover, and the same can be said for Edinburgh Fringe show titles.

Chef: Come Dine With Us! may make you think of a popular TV show, but this spectacular is as far from a daytime cooking programme as you can get.

It's a variety show ticking off so many genres in the space of an hour. Beatboxing, breakdancing, opera and comedy, a little bit of this and a little pinch of that make this Korean smorgasbord a very tasty experience. The theme of cooking interlinks the different acts, showing how one idea can add structure to a show without feeling consumed or constrained by it.

Like a human Punch and Judy show, the slapstick humour mixes seamlessly with the incredible displays of talent. Unexpected moments of beauty materialise, including an underwater dream sequence. Yet the energy never drops, and the performers are slicker than a sashimi chef. It's a united ensemble show, but every artist gets to show off and celebrate their own unique flavour. Each is a triple threat, but never do they try to outshine one other.

Smiles from ear to ear are constant in a theatre resounding with belly laughs. All ages will find themselves chortling from the sheer spontaneity of the onstage carnival of capers. This is what Fringe theatre is all about: unique entertainment.

If you can stand the heat of a smoking hot show, then get yourself in Chef's kitchen.

Chef: Come Dine With Us! runs at Assembly George Square Theatre until 29 August
